2018 upcycle challenge

The Upcycle Challenge was the place to bid on hand-crafted, repurposed pieces created by Minneapolis’ top style influencers and tastemakers. We recruited local partners to repurpose a pre-loved chair from Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity ReStore using Valspar paint and additional materials their creative minds can come up with!  Furniture was auctioned off at the show with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the ReStore.

Paint: Januel created a custom mix by Valspar, but recommends Indigo Streamer in the Valspar Reserve in flat finish for a velvety texture!

Inspired by my favorite dark jeans, I painted these tables a lovely dark denim in a flat finish for a velvety touch  (just like a well-washed pair of jeans!), distressed the paint a bit, glammed up the hardware, and added a cement top to make them desirable & functional for a modern family. Like my favorite jeans, these tables will match anything and be a well-loved favorite in any home...just as they were meant to be.

Concoct a contemporary cocktail hour with a modern day bar cart, they ooze vintage hollywood glamour.  Modern bar carts are just as much a stylistic decor choice as they are a functioning bar.  The original detailed spindles and simple lines are a nice mix of old and new. The new metallic finish, funky wheels and golden sleek hardware, this cart is ready for a garden party!

'Turning Your Inspiration Into Creative Spaces'

My goal was to redesign these two cases (that came filled with glass shelved and doors along with and shiny taffeta to display delicate jewelry pieces) into something completely opposite of how they began. I wanted them to have function and for design I was inspired by Minnesota – up North in particular.

The transformation started by removing the glass shelves and glass door inserts. Next up, I removed the back panels, sanded any rough edges and painted the interior and exterior with Valspar’s Chalky Finish Paint in Boot Leg (which I distressed once dry). From there, I secured the cases back-to-back, added a wood top surface along with wood shelving and set it on casters.

The end result, is a handsome, rugged cabinet that would look amazing in so many Minnesota homes!

Inspired by the beauty of an old library and incorporating the warmth of the dark wood color, these end tables will let you escape into whatever book you’re reading.  With brass tacks, roped accent legs, and a worldly graphic, these repurposed tables will go great with a large piece of leather furniture.  Libraries are a fantastic place to become more “Worldly” and these end tables will allow you to bring that experience into your home.

New Uses has completely redefined home goods resale. We’re different from other resale and thrift stores because we pay our customers CASH On-the-Spot for their “gently-used” artwork, furniture, home décor, lamps, and other needed household items.  New Uses offers consumers an alternative to traditional retail stores with “gently-used” household items at much lower prices. And, in keeping with our name, merchandise truly has a new use, respects the environment by reusing almost-new items…and you can find great pieces to add to your home that are in great condition and new to you.

A basic end table reimagined for today. We were drawn to both the simplicity, and at the same time design elements from decades past. The heavy detail of the doors, retro color/finish overshadowed the structural quality of the piece. Instead, we wanted to "re-doux" the vibe and re-energize the finish in a modern color scheme. Specialty techniques of paint/stain application with a "tone on tone" inspiration;helps re-new its past elegance for another home!

The Minneapolis Home + Remodeling Sales Team dove into inspiration using the Pantone Color of the Year – Ultra Violet.  And wow what a year to pick purple, SKOL Vikings!

We paired this ever so popular color with a trendy comeback pattern –paisley. The fabric we were able to find included an array of colors which is just what this project needed!

The chair gave us the opportunity to get creative with a combination of bright colors and fun fabrics throughout the seat, leg and spindle.

Use this chair in the front entry or your mud room as a punch of color and a place to take off flip flops, shoes or boots depending on our four Minnesota seasons.
